AVIATION TRAINING CENTRE
Have you ever considered having a career in aviation or Airport Management? Accessing training in aviation is easier than you think – Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (“the Authority”) has the solution for you. Let us take the time to introduce you to one of the jewels in the crown of the Authority, the Aviation Training Centre (ATCEN).
In 1995, the Authority entered into an agreement with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), to have a Regional Aviation Security Training Centre (ASTC) to serve and provide aviation security training within the North American, Caribbean and Central American Region. This Aviation Training Centre was the third to be established in the world.
Apart from aviation security training, in 2006, the Authority signed a contract with the Airports Council International (ACI) to become an approved ACI training centre resulting in the establishment of one of ACI’s global training hubs. This alignment with ACI ensured that the training centre provided a wider range of training courses and workshops which now included areas such as training in airport operations, finance, environmental and wildlife management, safety, crisis management and other disciplines.
ATCEN was the first ICAO/ ACI training centre to be established in the region and has been featured in international magazines such as the ACI world publication. The training centre is internationally accredited and the certification attained is internationally recognised. This institute can provide you with world class career development opportunities.
The Training school, which is located at the Piarco International Airport, sees not only local participants, but also students from across the Caribbean region and participants from as far as Bahrain, Pakistan, Australia, Madagascar, India and many other countries across the globe.
The premier international certification for airport managers is the International Airport Professional (IAP) designation. Ninety-five percent of the Authority’s Managers have achieved the IAP qualification, having successful completed the Airport Council International/International Civil Aviation Organization (ACI/ICAO) Airport Management Professional Accreditation Programme (AMPAP). It is the equivalent of the United States’ American Airport Accreditation for Executives (AAAE). This represents the highest number of qualified managers at any airport in the Latin America and Caribbean region and the highest number of airport professionals per capita for any airport globally.
Over the years, the Authority has maintained a strategic focus on learning, growth and talent management for all levels of airport staff.
At the Authority, we also have certified ACI/ICAO instructors, who are qualified to teach international courses. Mr Sheldon Harper, Manager Aviation Training, is certified as an instructor with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for the JETWAY Training Programme in contraband concealment and behavioural analysis. General Manager, Mr Hayden Newton, is a certified ACI instructor and teaches the Air Transport Systems Gateway course of the international AMPAP programme. Mr Hayden Newton has also served as a Board member of the IAP Community of Practice.
The Authority is committed to becoming the region’s leading provider of global aviation training and development and providing cutting edge training which enhances the learning experience of our international, regional and local aviation professionals and stakeholders.
